The Medusa 3D project that Ingy and Mehvash created is meant to be a ring holder. Rings will be dangling on the hair. We wanted to depict Medusa as a 3D project because we like to incorporate history in projects. Medusa is an interesting figure in history that can start a conversation about bullying. Vilifying the victim is a common theme among the world and has been since the beginning.
Athena transformed Medusa’s face into something that if looked upon turned people into stone and instead of hair she was given snakes, after a tragedy happened to her. This narrative would be a great to think about with students in an art classroom. It’s always nice to think about how Medusa can be empowered by just being herself.
Beginning with the Medusa story and delving into cyber bullying which a lot of students might become a target of and if not then promoting awareness about it and finding ways to prevent and handle it. I can foresee a conversation stemming from this story about stereotypes about beauty and the way someone looks. How stereotypes affect our lives? Why it is important to fight stereotypes? How do we develop empathy towards people and groups different than our own? How can we learn to take action to address injustices and bogus labels?
