The Encounter by Hubertus von der Goltz, features a plank and two silhouetted figures of a female and male walking, on a balance beam, towards each other. On opposite ends of the plank, the shadowy figures never meet on that rooftop but there’s a promise of a union or, even just, brushing against each other’s scent as they pass. To me, they seem to meet in an unseen world which permeates the viewer’s material world. The sculpture is something to meet; on the sidewalk where everyone’s gaze is leveled with their own immediate space, the Encounter demands that the viewers break that cycle and look up; as, the sculpture stands above the 1800 Maple Ave parking garage’s roof.
